Quail Hunts

Classic Wing Shooting in Old Florida

There’s nothing quite like a covey rise. One moment, stillness. The next, an explosion of wings. At Silver Lake Preserve, we’ve been chasing quail through pines and palmettos for generations—and we’d love to take you along.

Our guided quail hunts are conducted with the professionalism and care that have defined this preserve since it was the Lykes family’s private hunting grounds. You’ll hunt behind exceptional bird dogs, guided by professionals who know every inch of this land. Sharp shooting, beautiful country, and explosive covey rises—this is quail hunting the way it should be.

A Morning in the Field

Picture this: the morning air is cool and crisp, the dew still clinging to the wiregrass as you follow your guide into the pines. The dogs work ahead—methodical, eager, noses low to the ground. Then one freezes, locked on point, trembling with anticipation. Your heart quickens. You step forward, shotgun ready. And then—the covey explodes in a blur of wings and whistling feathers, scattering in every direction as you pick your bird and swing through.

This is the rhythm of a morning at Silver Lake Preserve. Between covey rises, you’ll walk through some of the most beautiful country in Florida—open pine flatwoods, native prairie dotted with saw palmetto, and oak hammocks draped in Spanish moss. Your guide will share stories of hunts past, point out wildlife along the way, and make sure the dogs are always working the best cover. By the time you break for lunch, you’ll have lived more in a few hours than most people do in a week.
